Dive Into Learning

Do you have a child aged 0 to 5? We invite you to join Dive into Learning, LBPL's early learning program! Dive Into Learning encourages families to read 1,000 books with their children before they enter Kindergarten, provides activities and workshops to get little ones ready for school, and supports caregivers as their children’s first teachers.

To participate, simply visit any of our 12 branches to pick up your physical tracker. You can also track your progress by visiting the Beanstack website or downloading the app from Google Play or the App Store.

How Does It Work?

  1. Visit any of our 12 branches to receive a physical tracker or create your account on the Library’s Beanstack site. Select the Dive into Reading Challenge to begin.
  2. Use the Beanstack website or mobile app to track the books you and your child read together.
  3. For every 100 books you read, visit the Library to pick up your prize.
  4. When you complete 1,000 books, visit the Library to receive your final prize.
  5. Participants who have completed the challenge will be invited to join the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Graduation and will be contacted via email.

How Long Does It Take?

1,000 books may seem like a lot of books, but let's do the math...

Reading just 1 book a night means you'll read:

  • 365 books in a year
  • 730 books in two years...
  • ...and 1,095 books in three years!

Imagine if you read 2 books a night? Or 3?

Most kids start Kindergarten around age 5, so there's plenty of time to complete this challenge. You can read any book as many times as you’d like to count towards the total. Any book read aloud during Storytime at the Library also counts. You can do this!

Dive Into Learning Events

The Long Beach Public Library will host Dive into Learning events at all 12 of the branches throughout the year.

These events include special performers, workshops for parents, crafts, school readiness activities, and other programs that are great for families with little ones. Check out the Dive into Learning Calendar for upcoming programs.

Ways to Share a Book with Your Child

Reading with your child is the best way to build a strong foundation for future success. Dive into Reading is the perfect way to instill in your little one a love of reading and help them be ready for kindergarten and beyond. Check out these literacy tips below:

  • Read together!
  • Visit your child's favorite book over and over again.
  • Talk or sing about the pictures in a book.
  • Let your child tell the story.
  • Visit the library! Even babies can get a library card.

¿Cómo inscribo a mi niño o niña?
