When can my class visit?

  • Class visits are held Wednesday mornings from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. This time is reserved before the library opens to the public for a quieter, more focused experience.

How long is the visit?

  • Visits typically last 1.5 to 2 hours.

What’s included in a class visit?

  • Each visit includes:
    • A welcome and brief library orientation
    • Storytime (for younger grades)
    • Time to browse and check out books (students must have a valid library card)

How many students can we bring?

  • We recommend keeping group sizes to a manageable classroom size (around 25–30 students). If you have a larger group, please contact us to discuss possible accommodations.

How many adult chaperones are needed?

  • We ask for at least 1 adult chaperone per 10 students. More are welcome!

What ages or grades can participate?

  • Class visits are best suited for Kindergarten through 5th grade, but we’re happy to tailor visits for other age groups upon request.

Do students need library cards?

  • Yes, students need a valid Long Beach Public Library card to check out books during their visit.

How can students get a library card?

  • Attached to your confirmation email will be library card applications in English and Spanish. Khmer and Tagalog are also available upon request.
  • Guardians must complete the top portion for the child and the bottom portion with their own information.
  • Please return completed applications at least one week before the visit so we can process the cards in advance.

What if students already have a card?

  • Please remind students to bring their existing library card with them on the day of the visit.

What if a student has fees related to missing or damaged materials?*

  • Students cannot check out books if they owe more than $20 in fees related to missing or damaged materials.
  • No fees will be collected during the class visit.
  • Guardians must visit the library during public hours to pay fees or request a card replacement.

*LBPL does not charge late fees, only fees for lost or damaged materials.
