Building & Safety

The Building and Safety Bureau ensures that buildings are designed and constructed to safeguard occupants and the public. The Bureau enforces regulations governing fire prevention and mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems. It helps property owners comply with accessibility requirements providing equal access for persons with disabilities and works to ensure buildings have the structural strength to withstand natural hazards such as earthquakes. The Bureau also promotes sustainability through energy-efficiency standards and reviews development proposals near oil and gas wells to ensure safety. Building and Safety staffs the Permit Center at City Hall, assisting residents, contractors, architects and property owners through an efficient and responsible urban development process.
