Background

The LGBTQ+ Cultural District project will advance implementation of priority components identified in the Strategic Improvement Plan (Plan). The Plan was developed through a robust community visioning process that began in 2022 and led by the Long Beach Community Development Department. The Plan was formally adopted by the City Council on May 21, 2024, and will be implemented in phases by the Department of Public Works as funding becomes available.

The project will introduce improvements along the Broadway corridor intended to enhance public space activation while recognizing and celebrating the historical and cultural significance of Long Beach’s LGBTQ+ community. Proposed decorative and streetscape enhancements will strengthen the identity of the corridor, improve the experience for residents and visitors, commemorate the community’s cultural legacy, and reinforce the City’s continued investment in the district.

With the funding currently available, the first phase of improvements will focus on the area between Hermosa and Junipero Avenues. This section was prioritized because it serves as an important community gathering space, connecting residents and visitors to the beach, Bixby Park, and the route of the annual Long Beach Pride Parade. These initial improvements will help lay the foundation for future enhancements along the corridor as additional funding becomes available.

This project is part of the Elevate ’28 Infrastructure Investment Plan, a historic initiative dedicated to enhancing Long Beach parks, community facilities, mobility access, and streets. Learn more at lbelevate28.com.

Project timeline is set barring weather delays and other unforeseen circumstances.

• Establish a cultural district to acknowledge and celebrate the history of the LGBTQ+ community
• Strengthen and support local businesses through corridor enhancements and public improvements
• Enhance the Broadway corridor to encourage community engagement and active use of public space
• Promote long-term sustainability and resilience for the community

Project Funding

The project is funded by Measure A and Federal Earmarks.

June 2026

The City of Long Beach hosted a community event this month to unveil conceptual designs for the LGBTQ+ Cultural District project. Community members gathered to learn more about the project vision and view proposed improvements intended to celebrate and strengthen the corridor’s cultural identity. The event featured remarks from Mayor Rex Richardson, Second District Concilwoman Cindy Allen, Director of Public Works Joshua Hickman and Director of Health and Human Services Alison King. Attendees had the opportunity to explore display boards and connect with City staff to learn more about the project and its next steps.
