Background

The Clean Team is a vital division within the Public Works Department dedicated to enhancing quality of life in Long Beach through proactive maintenance and public space preservation. Through daily field operations and specialized programs, the team helps keep sidewalks, alleyways, parkways, and neighborhoods clean, safe, and accessible across the city.

The division also partners directly with residents by responding to service requests submitted through the Go Long Beach platform, addressing issues such as illegal dumping, graffiti, debris removal, and other neighborhood concerns. This collaborative approach allows the Clean Team to quickly respond to community needs while encouraging shared responsibility for maintaining clean public spaces.

By working alongside neighborhood associations, community groups, and local businesses, the Clean Team supports a cleaner, safer, and more vibrant Long Beach. • Right-of-Way Clean-Ups

  Public alleyways, parkways, and other right-of-way infrastructure are essential for residents and visitors to move freely and enjoy public areas. When graffiti, trash, and debris accumulate, these spaces can become unattractive, difficult to access, and, in some cases, unsafe. Through daily efforts such as graffiti removal, litter collection, debris clearing, and general maintenance, the Clean Team helps preserve the quality and appearance of Long Beach neighborhoods. This includes: 

  • Illegally dumped item pickup and disposal: The Clean Team collects and disposes of everything from litter and debris to large items like furniture and illegally dumped appliances in public spaces. Report illegally dumped items by submitting a Go Long Beach request.
    
    If you have large or bulky items to dispose of, visit LB Recycles’ Request a Special Collection webpage where you can request up to 12 free pick-ups a year!
  • Graffiti abatement: The Clean Team responds to reports of graffiti in public spaces by washing or painting over affected surfaces. Report graffiti by submitting a Go Long Beach request or calling the graffiti hotline 562.570.2773.
  • Public health and safety: The Clean Team supports the work of several City departments, including the Department of Health and Human Services and the Long Beach Police Department, in addressing public health and safety risks related to homelessness by cleaning debris and sanitizing affected spaces.  Report encampments by calling 562.570.8300.
  • Pressure washing: Team members use specialized pressure washing equipment to remove built-up grime, sludge, and dirt from public surfaces. These efforts help restore and revitalize heavily soiled areas, creating cleaner, safer, and more welcoming spaces.
  • Hazardous waste: The Clean Team assesses areas and coordinates with a third-party contractor to remove and safely dispose of hazardous items like paints and chemicals, used needles and human waste to keep public spaces safe and usable. 

• 24/7 Mattress Drop Off

  The Clean Team offers the 24/7 Mattress Drop Off service, a convenient way to help residents responsibly and safely dispose of used mattresses. Through this effort, mattress materials are recycled whenever possible, helping reduce landfill waste and support environmental sustainability goals outlined in the Long Beach Climate Action Plan.
  
  Residents can leave their old mattresses in a clearly designated space located at 970 W. Chester Place and avoid trips to the landfill and landfill fees. This service is provided at no charge to residents and is paid for by the City of Long Beach’s Refuse Fund.

• Litter-Free Long Beach (Neighborhood Cleanups)

  The Clean Team supports Litter-Free Long Beach (LFLB), a program that keeps our neighborhoods, parks, and business corridors clean. The program brings residents, businesses, and community groups together for local cleanups, strengthening community bonds and raising awareness about the impact of litter.
