Long Beach Police Cadet Program 

Are you a college student or recent graduate interested in serving the vibrant City of Long Beach?  

Become an LBPD Cadet!  

The Youth & Community Engagement Division of the Long Beach Police Department is looking for highly motivated young adults between the ages of 18 - 24 enrolled in an accredited college or university with a minimum of a 2.0 GPA or a recent graduate to join our team of youth leaders in serving our beautiful city.   

The Cadet program is a unique opportunity designed to introduce recent high school graduates to law enforcement careers and prepare them for entry into the Long Beach Police Department’s professional and sworn positions. Cadets perform a wide variety of police support duties and clerical assistance for the Long Beach Police Department. Cadets also have the chance to establish, grow, and preserve positive relationships between the community and the police department, gaining valuable experience and skills along the way.  

As a Cadet, you will:  

  • Work a flexible schedule - a minimum of 20 hours a week.  
  • Learn various public safety techniques that will preserve and strive to improve the quality of life within the City of Long Beach, such as problem-solving policing and leadership strategies that encourage and build positive relationships between the Long Beach Police Department and our community.  
  • Establish, grow, and preserve positive relationships between the community and LBPD.  
  • Be at the forefront of impactful community interaction and collaborative engagements between the LBPD and our vibrant community. Cadets will continue to build diverse community-based partnerships guided by our department’s core values.  
  • Have an assigned police mentor, attend a monthly ride-along, provide supportive assistance, and learn the duties performed in but not limited to the following areas: customer service, lobby reception, community engagement, forensics, records, crime prevention, dispatch, patrol, and property control.  
  • Receive certifications in First Aid, CPR, CERT, CLETS, Stop the Bleed, Traffic Control and many more, ensuring you are well-equipped for your role.  
  • Participate in hands-on civic and community engagement opportunities.  
  • Learn, understand, interpret, and apply Police Department policies and procedures. 
  • Free physical training assessments and learn policing via rotational details.
