COVID 19 Update

Release Date: 2020-03-09

Dear Friends,

Preliminary results indicate that three people in Long Beach have tested positive for COVID-19, or Coronavirus Disease 2019.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is currently working to confirm the cases.  All three of the individuals have a history of travel to areas of known community transmission of COVID-19 – one of them domestically and the other two internationally. They are each in stable condition.  One is being treated at a local hospital and the others are isolated at home.
The Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services has been following the spread of COVID-19 for the last several months and is working to find additional contacts and mitigate the risk from these identified cases.  The City of Long Beach implores anyone with a history of travel to areas impacted by the virus to disclose so to their healthcare provider if they begin to develop symptoms.  Providers, in turn, are being asked their patients about any recent travel and report suspected cases of COVID-19 to the Health Department immediately.
As we continue to learn more about COVID-19 it’s imperative that all our residents practice beneficial and hygienic habits that help limit the spread of infectious diseases like:
  • Washing your hands, often, with soap and water for at least 20 seconds,
  • Avoiding close contact with people who are sick,
  • Refraining from touching your eyes, nose, and moth with unwashed hands,
  • And covering your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze – and discarding the tissue in the trash.
It is absolutely recommended that anyone feeling sick stay home and follow the advice of your medical provider.  It is also recommended that anyone with underlying health or respiratory conditions consider avoiding large gatherings of people.  The City encourages all residents to visit http://www.longbeach.gov/COVID19 for up-to-date facts and avoid misinformation.  You can also follow updates, tips, and notices on the City’s social media pages: @LongBeachCity and @LBHealthDept, and by following the hashtag #COVID19LongBeach.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out to my office.  My staff and I are available to assist you at 562-570-6919 or by e-mail HERE

In Service,

Councilwoman, First District
