Long Beach Council Supports State Bills Aimed To Protect ImmigrantsRelease Date: 2017-02-08
“We need to take a stand,” First District Councilwoman Lena Gonzalez said. “Given the demographic makeup of the city: we don’t be silent — we speak up.”
Gonzalez led the charge to put the city’s support behind the California Values Act and the California Religious Freedom Act at Tuesday’s City Council meeting. Her proposal was co-sponsored by council members Rex Richardson (Ninth District), Jeannine Pearce (Second District) and Roberto Uranga (Seventh District).
“Long Beach is one the most diverse cities in America,” Gonzalez said before the meeting. “As the vice chair of the State Legislative Committee, I believe it is imperative that Long Beach shows the rest of the state and nation that we stand with our immigrant community and that we stand for religious freedom.”
