Farm Lot 59 recently became "Certified Naturally Grown." This new program audits farmers who don't use synthetic herbicides, pesticides, fertilizers, or GMOs. Certified Naturally Grown is a non-profit not affiliated with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Organic program, but is based on the Participatory Guarantee Systems model, using peer reviews and inspections by other farmers. It is a great way to promote farmer-to-farmer knowledge sharing and support while creating more transparency about how our food is grown.

The 2016 Summer High School Internship program starts June 27 and ends August 19. Students must have reliable transportation to and from the internship and be available the entire eight weeks to participate. Interns earn $10.10 an hour and work up to 30 hours per week. The curriculum is designed to help youth gain the skills needed to successfully enter the workforce.

Applications are open to current sophomores, juniors or seniors in good academic standing (2.5 GPA or higher) attending a high school in the Long Beach Unified School District service area. To be considered, applications must be submitted in person before 6 p.m. on March 1, 2016 to Pacific Gateway.

The Port will be hosting an Open House and Q & A Session. Come out and hear more about this extraordinary opportunity. You will get a chance to see our offices, meet former high school interns, port mentors and ask questions.
Southern California Edison (SCE) crews are working safely and quickly to restore power to areas affected by weather-related outages. Due to the severity of the storms, estimated restoration times are not currently available. SCE is bringing in approximately 200 crews to identify and repair the damage caused by the rain and wind storms.

SCE reminds customers that severe weather could result in service interruptions overnight and that they should take steps now in their homes and businesses to be prepared.

If you see a downed power line or dangling wire — even if it appears not to be live — don’t touch or approach it or anything that is in contact with it and call 911 immediately.

SCE encourages customers to get ready for potential outages by taking some measures.
