Bike MonthRelease Date: 0001-01-01
May is Bike Month, and the City of Long Beach is celebrating with many exciting events and projects!
Long Beach is proud to be a bicycle-friendly city, and we are working hard to become even more multimodal. With the recent completion of the Daisy Bike Lane connecting downtown to North Long Beach and the reconfiguration of Broadway and 3rd to create additional protected bike lanes, our city now has 120 miles of bicycle infrastructure!
Our bike-share program recently celebrated its 3-year anniversary and has been immensely successful, seeing a total of:
- 37,000+ all-time members
- 520,000+ miles ridden
- 100,000+ hours ridden
- 450,000 pounds of carbon reduced
And this is just the beginning.
Construction on the 15th St. bike boulevard project is anticipated to begin this summer. We have initiated community outreach efforts to build bicycle infrastructure on the west side. And throughout this year, we will grow our bike-share program from 400 to 1,000 total bikes and expand the network to include North Long Beach. With these plans—and much, much more in the works—we hope that by the year 2040, we will have 30% of all trips in the city made by bicycle.
We want Long Beach to become a truly multimodal, sustainable, and livable city for everyone. Thousands of Long Beach residents do not have access to a car. By developing a robust bike-share network and bicycle infrastructure in historically underserved neighborhoods, we can ensure that everyone has access to safe and affordable transportation options.
The benefits of bicycling are numerous—from safer roadways to better quality of life. Make sure to do your part to reduce our carbon footprint by biking this month. There are a number of upcoming events throughout the city that will help get people out of their cars and onto bikes. Please see the calendar below for more details or visit Go Active LB!
