In effort to increase adoptions for long-term-stay animals, Long Beach Animal Care Services (LBACS) will host a series of free adoption events on weekends throughout April and invites community members of all ages to attend. The series kicks off Saturday, April 1, 2023, with an Easter Egg Hunt Adoption Event.

“Despite reaching our highest adoption rate ever in 2022, there are still many animals in need of safe, loving homes,” said Mayor Rex Richardson. “Our shelter is at overcapacity and we have reached a critical point to get them housed. I urge anyone interested in getting a new furry family member to adopt a dog at one of our adoption events.”

To encourage the responsible, mindful adoption of animals in need of a home, LBACS will host the following adoption events throughout April:

  • Saturday, April 1, 3 to 5 p.m.: Easter Egg Hunt Adoption Event – Enjoy music, photos and springtime family-friendly activities like egg hunts, creating pet grams, egg decorating and bunny hoppy hour. The kickoff event will also include free adoption promotions and will take place at LBACS, located at 7700 E. Spring St.

  • Friday, April 7, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.: One Health Day Adoption Event – Adopt a pet with zero adoption fee and also learn about One Health, a Long Beach Health Department program being spotlighted in observance of National Public Health Week. Event taking place at the Parks, Recreation and Marine (PRM) Administration Offices at 2760 E. Barrios St.).

  • Saturday, April 8, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.: Silverado Park Adoption Fair – Join LBACS staff and the Office of Seventh District Councilmember Roberto Uranga at an adoption event at Silverado Park (1545 W. 31st St.). All adoption fees will be waived and information and resources about spay/neuter vouchers, pet licensing and pet laws will be available.

  • Saturday, April 15, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.: Proper LBC Adoption Event – Adopt a pet with zero adoption fee, taking place at local retailer Proper LBC (5209 2nd St.).

  • Saturday, April 22, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.: Pet Supplies Plus Adoption Event – Adopt a pet with zero adoption fee and/or donate needed items from the LBACS wish list

“Now is the time to unleash your compassion. Join us on our tour of the city as we hold adoption events throughout the month of April and be a part of our life-saving family,” said LBACS Bureau Manager Staycee Dains.

In 2022, LBACS reached its highest adoption rate ever, placing 1,968 pets into homes and increasing placement of animals by 194% since 2018. Despite this success, there has been an overwhelming number of animals, mainly dogs, entering the facility at an unprecedented rate and resulting in the facility being over capacity. LBACS continues to work with various partnering rescue organizations for support and identify other strategies for long-term solutions. Because the shelter is over critical capacity with large dogs, and due to the urgency to get them adopted, the City is now offering a limited-time incentive opportunity for those who adopt a long-term stay dog. People can receive two tickets to the Aquarium of the Pacific after adopting, available on a first-come first-served basis. People who adopt a pit bull will also be entered into an opportunity drawing for the chance to receive one-day tickets to the Acura Grand Prix Long Beach. The opportunity drawing will be held the week of April 10, so adoptions that take place now through April 9 will be eligible for the opportunity drawing.
