Technology plays a significant role in our lives, and with the evolution of technology, cybercriminals are also evolving and finding ways to compromise our security. As a result, cyber risk management has become a top priority for the City of Long Beach.

The Technology and Innovation Department is taking several steps to secure infrastructure, devices, and networks.

Here's what we're doing:

  • Implementing a comprehensive cyber security awareness program for all City personnel.

  • Sending regular cyber tips and tests to City employees to maintain awareness of the latest cyber threats.
  • Regularly conducting risk assessments per industry standards to ensure the City maintains a strong security posture.
  • Continually implementing and updating cyber security standards and using new technology to protect the City's networks and systems.
  • Partnering with stakeholders, including the Department of Homeland Security and other regional partners, to identify opportunities that significantly advance cyber security.
  • Obtaining and exchanging threat intelligence information to stay informed of potential cyberattacks.

As a small business owner, you can safeguard your business from malicious cyber activity by:

  • Training employees in security principles to prevent cyberattacks
  • Enabling multi-factor authentication
  • Maintaining data backups
  • Ensuring all software is updated regularly
  • Developing an emergency operating plan
  • Working with your CPA and or an independent cyber security consultant

As an individual community member, you can protect yourself while on the go by:

  • Being cautious of phishing scams
  • Avoiding unsecured public Wi-Fi hotspots
  • Protecting your devices with strong passwords
  • Updating your software through allowing automatic updates
  • Researching before downloading a new app
  • Setting up two factor or multi-factor authentication on your accounts

We understand cyber security is a shared responsibility, and we encourage everyone to take the necessary precautions to protect themselves and their businesses. By working together, we can secure our digital lives.

The FCC and CISA have resources to help small businesses and the National Cybersecurity Alliance has resources for individuals protect themselves from cyber security threats.
