Sustainability Strategic Plan

The Office of Sustainability is developing a new Sustainability Strategic Plan for the City of Long Beach which will replace the Sustainable City Action Plan (SCAP). The SCAP was adopted by City Council in 2010 and guided the City of Long Beach’s initiatives around environmental sustainability for 10 years. This plan was originally developed by staff to identify some of the most pressing sustainability issues of the time, set ambitious goals for new and existing programs and policies, and help track progress towards sustainability achievements. The Office of Sustainability is currently creating a 10-year review to look back at the accomplishments of the past 10 years and learn from the work that has been done as staff works to develop the next Sustainability Strategic Plan for the City.

The new Sustainability Strategic Plan will set priorities and measurable goals for the City’s sustainability initiatives for the next 5 years and support the implementation of other City initiatives such as of the Climate Action and Adaptation Plan (CAAP) and as well as the Framework for Reconciliation. This Plan will also ensure the City is aligned with regional initiatives such as the LA County Sustainability Plan and the SCAG Green Region Initiative, and that the City is tracking progress toward national and international best practices as recognized by the ACEEE Clean Energy Scorecard, the CDP Cities A List, and LEED for Cities.

Public Input

This plan is meant to reflect the environmental priorities of the Long Beach community. Much public input has already been collected through the development of the CAAP and the Framework for Reconciliation, among other outreach efforts. The Office of Sustainability will use this input to inform the Sustainability Strategic Plan priorities as well as host some direct input opportunities for the public to voice opinions and concerns directly.
