Long Beach Climate Action Plan Implementation & Reporting
Adopted on August 16, 2022, the Long Beach Climate Action Plan (LB CAP) provides a framework to reduce the City's greenhouse gas (GHG) footprint and ensure the community and physical assets are better protected from the impacts of climate change. To oversee the implementation of the LB CAP, the Office of Climate Action & Sustainability was established by the City Council as part of the City’s Fiscal Year 2023 Budget. The new Office was an expansion of the existing Office of Sustainability (est. 2008) and its mission is to advance environmental stewardship and equity in the City of Long Beach.
The vision of the LB CAP is to create a more sustainable, resilient, and equitable city by addressing climate change in a way that remedies existing environmental health disparities while also improving health, quality of life, and economic vitality throughout Long Beach. One of its primary goals is for the city to reach net-zero emissions by 2045. The City is tracking GHG emissions and progress towards that goal through our Climate Portal. LB CAP implementation updates are provided through annual Climate Portal updates, biannual GHG inventory reports, LB CAP Annual Reports, and at regular meetings of the Climate Resilient & Sustainable City Commission.
