About the Climate Action Team

The Office of Climate Action & Sustainability was established by the City Council as part of the City’s Fiscal Year 2023 Budget after the adoption of the Long Beach Climate Action Plan (LB CAP) on August 16, 2022. The new Office was an expansion of the existing Office of Sustainability (est. 2008) and its mission is to advance environmental stewardship and equity in the City of Long Beach. The Office of Climate Action & Sustainability is part of the City Manager 's Office and supports the Climate Resilient & Sustainable City Commission, an advisory body to City Council.

While the Sustainability Team oversees the day-to-day operation of the Office's programs (Mulch, Tree Planting, Green Business, & UAIZ), the Climate Action Team focuses on LB CAP coordination and implementation. The vision of the Long Beach Climate Action Plan is to create a more sustainable, resilient and, equitable city by addressing climate change in a way that remedies existing environmental health disparities while also improving health, quality of life, and economic vitality throughout Long Beach. To realize this vision, the LB CAP outlines 61 action items in 7 key areas of climate concern that will help the City reach its goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2045.

Long Beach Climate Action Plan

The Long Beach Climate Action Plan (LB CAP) was adopted by City Council on August 16, 2022. The vision of the LB CAP is to create a more sustainable, resilient, and equitable city by addressing climate change in a way that remedies existing environmental health disparities while also Improving health, quality of life, and economic vitality throughout Long Beach.

The implementation of the LB CAP will help Long Beach realize:

1. Low-carbon, climate-resilient buildings and neighborhoods
2. Safe and adaptable infrastructure
3. Protected and enhanced natural systems
4. A healthy, resilient and ready population
5. Residents and businesses with minimized carbon footprints

The LB CAP establishes a series of mitigation and adaptation actions for the City to take to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to reach its target of 40% below 1990 emission levels by 2030, with the ultimate goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2045.

By prioritizing climate action, the City strives to promote a wide range of co-benefits, such as creating socio-economic opportunities, reducing poverty and inequality, and improving the health of our community and local environment.
