City of Long Beach Receives National Inaugural AI 50 Award from the Center for Public Sector AI
Release Date: 2025-08-29
The City of Long Beach Department of Technology and Innovation (TID) has been named a winner in the inaugural AI 50 Awards, a new recognition from the Center for Public Sector AI, a national research and advisory institute focused on technology policy and best practices in state and local government. This honor reflects Long Beach’s real-world AI impact—and the City’s commitment to improving public service through more innovative, more responsible technology.
The City responsibly uses Generative AI (Gen AI) tools to drive progress for its operations, staff, and greater community. The City is a founding board member of the GovAICoalition, a collection of 2,000+ government practitioners representing 850+ local, county, and state agencies consolidating resources for community-centered AI in the public sector. TID also hired a dedicated Data Governance and AI Program Manager in March 2025 to oversee the development of an AI Strategy document.
This recent progress builds upon a strong AI policy foundation rooted in safe and ethical AI use and upskilling City staff. With guidance from the resident-led Technology and Innovation Commission, TID issued two updates to its Generative AI Guidance, which provides best practices and guardrails for staff's use of AI as the department develops a formal policy. Staff education has been another priority, as TID has hosted several Gen AI trainings with City Departments, issued a second staff survey to gauge current AI usage practices and benefits, and convened an AI staffworkgroup to promote peer learning, enthusiasm, and use case sharing.
Moving forward, TID seeks to empower Long Beach community members to use AI safely and build trust with residents around theCity's AI-based programs and tools. TID recently conducted a Community AI survey to understand current sentiment anddemand for resources. In response to this feedback, TID is planning a series of AI literacy training sessions for Fall 2025,which will build upon our foundational Digital Inclusion initiative.
