Yard Sign Program – Safe Drivers Make Better Neighbors
Background
People driving too fast is the leading cause of traffic collisions in Long Beach, many of which result in someone being seriously injured or killed. The chances of a pedestrian being severely injured or killed in a collision increases substantially with higher speeds. Research shows that a pedestrian struck at 20 mph has an estimated 87% chance of surviving, but that probability drops to 60% at 30 mph and only 27% at 40 mph. These sharp declines highlight how increases in speed can have life-changing consequences.

Encouraging drivers to slow down, where pedestrian activity is high, is critical in achieving safer streets. In support of the Safe Streets Long Beach Action Plan, the Safe Drivers Make Better Neighbors program brings awareness to the importance of safer speeds on neighborhood streets. Through the program, Long Beach residents can request a complimentary yard sign to show support of slower speeds for safer streets, especially for vulnerable road users such as children, seniors and cyclists.
