Background

The Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) Crime Laboratory project will construct a new, modern forensic laboratory to support the Department’s current and future investigative needs. Designed to enhance forensic operations, the project will provide a secure, purpose-built facility that improves evidence processing, strengthens operational efficiency and supports the delivery of timely, high-quality forensic services.

The project also includes upgrades to the building’s systems and infrastructure to create a safe, functional and reliable work environment for laboratory staff. Through thoughtful planning and design, the new facility will help ensure the LBPD is equipped with the resources needed to support public safety. 

This project is part of the Elevate ’28 Infrastructure Investment Plan, a historic initiative dedicated to enhancing Long Beach parks, community facilities, mobility access, and streets. Learn more at lbelevate28.com.

Objectives

• Deliver a modern, secure and fully functional forensic laboratory that supports operational needs
• Improve evidence processing and storage capabilities to enhance efficiency
• Upgrade building systems and life safety to provide a safe and reliable facility
• Create a modern work environment that supports high-quality forensic services and future operational needs

Project Features

• New forensic laboratory spaces, evidence processing areas, evidence storage rooms, offices and support spaces
• New specialized laboratory casework and equipment
• New HVAC system and upgrades to plumbing and electrical systems
• New low-voltage systems, including access control (AWID), surveillance monitoring cameras and communications infrastructure
• Fire and life safety system improvements
• New partitions, ceilings, flooring, finishes, doors and hardware

This project is supported by the General Fund, Measure A Bonds and Bond Proceeds.

The construction contract is expected to be executed in late August with construction beginning in early September.
