Project Information

The COVID-19 Memorial Project will install a physical and place-based tribute to honor and commemorate the lives lost to COVID-19. The project design and its formulation will be guided by a community-based advisory committee comprised of individuals that are connected to or represent a group that has been impacted by the pandemic. The advisory committee will select the location, form, and design of the future memorial. The project aims to create a dedicated space within the Long Beach community to recognize and memorialize those affected by COVID-19.

Background

In the Spring of 2022, the City assembled the COVID-19 Memorial Advisory Committee. This committee was (Committee) tasked with developing an intentional and deliberate process for the establishment of a COVID-19 Memorial (Memorial). The Committee is comprised of community leaders and represents a diversity of backgrounds and expertise in the arts, healthcare, and education. Local organizers and first responders who witnessed the trauma firsthand and led the COVID-19 response at the neighborhood level are also participants and instrumental in providing feedback.

The Committee reviewed the submitted artist Statements of Qualifications and conceptual artwork designs and has determined that the submissions for the Memorial were of a high caliber,, visibly striking, and met the goals and intentions established. The selected design entitled “Twin Arches”, was submitted by PAO Design. “Twin Arches” memorializes those who died during the pandemic and, creates a peaceful setting where members of the community can interact with the artwork and engage in reflection. The installation’s location will provide opportunities for social gathering and healing in a central part of Long Beach.
