Long Beach, CA - The City of Long Beach Departments of Parks, Recreation and Marine (PRM) and Health and Human Services (Health Department) have launched a youth community survey to promote and enhance physical and social activity in parks for middle school-aged youth looking for a safe space for recreation, exercise and connection with peers. Parks have many health benefits both physically and mentally, including fresh air, services and resources that promote exercise and fitness, sports and recreational programs, and space for social connection.

The survey, available in English, Spanish, Khmer and Tagalog, is open now through Thursday, May 22 and will engage middle school youth ages 11 through 14 with questions about how local parks can support their health and wellbeing by enhancing resources and programs. The data collected will allow PRM and Health to gain insights into youth preferences, interests and barriers to participating in outdoor activities. These insights will be utilized to create a program that aligns with the specific needs and desires of participants, developing a more impactful and enjoyable experience that not only encourages physical activity, but also fosters a sense of community and connection with nature.

The survey is available online at LBParks.org. Young residents may also complete the survey in-person at any of the following park facilities during normal business hours:

  • Cesar E. Chavez Park, 401 Golden Ave.
  • Drake Park, 951 Maine Ave.
  • Freeman Center, 1205 Freeman Ave.
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Park, 1950 Lemon Ave.
  • McBride Park, 1550 Martin Luther King Jr. Ave.

Youth who fill out the survey online or at any of the five designated park facilities will be eligible for a chance to win prizes such as t-shirts, hats or gift cards from local vendors.

This effort aligns with PRM’s Strategic Plan goal (4-1-A) and the Health Department’s Youth and Emerging Adults Strategic Plan Goal 1, which both propose encouraging medical professionals to recommend time in parks where appropriate.
