Long Beach, CA – Long Beach Public Library’s (Library) 5th Annual Vida Latina celebration series will return Sept. 15 through Nov. 2, 2023. The Vida Latina celebration honors Latin American heritage through a series of captivating events at all Library locations, that will showcase the diverse and vibrant culture of Latin American communities.

“Our Long Beach Public Library continues to promote inclusivity and diversity by highlighting the rich culture of Hispanic and Latinx people in Long Beach,” said Mayor Rex Richardson. “Programs like Vida Latina are instrumental in celebrating our diverse community and fostering a sense of belonging."

Building on the success of the past four years, this year's Vida Latina will present an exciting blend of activities for adults, teens and kids, including beloved classics such as Lotería and Cuentos y Cantos Storytime, alongside innovative additions like Amate Art, create your own Huipil garment, and the Mercadito Literario, a literary festival highlighting Latinx authors, vendors, performances and programming for the whole family. Mercadito Literario will take place on Saturday, Oct. 7, from noon to 4 p.m. at the Billie Jean King Main Library (200 W. Broadway).

Through its annual Vida Latina celebration, the Library takes pride in presenting an array of special programs, curated book and film lists, and engaging activities that warmly welcome library visitors to immerse themselves in the richness of Latin American culture. Moreover, the Library’s website includes 'Reflections of Long Beach,' a dynamic digital space accessible year-round, that offers visitors an opportunity to delve into the vibrant cultural history of Long Beach and fosters exploration, learning, and meaningful connections.

"Vida Latina is more than just a celebration; it's a bridge that connects us to the rich tapestry of Latin American culture and traditions," said Cathy De Leon, Director of Library Services. "As we commemorate the fifth year of Vida Latina, we reaffirm our commitment to fostering a sense of unity and belonging in our diverse community through these culturally enriching events."

The Library’s Vida Latina celebration is generously supported by MemorialCare Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital Long Beach, Friends of the Long Beach Public Library, and the Long Beach Public Library Foundation. To see the full schedule of programs, visit the events calendar or call the Library at 562.570.7500 during operating hours.
