Long Beach, CA - Today, via livestream, the City of Long Beach unveiled the Houghton Park Community Center (6301 Myrtle Avenue).

“Our brand new community center at Houghton Park was made possible in part by Measure A,” said Mayor Robert Garcia  “Quality community spaces like this are important to kids and families and I’m proud of our city for delivering a LEED certified building to North Long Beach.”

The expanded Community Center will connect to the existing community center via a breezeway and will surround the historic 1930’s portion of the building. It features two large multipurpose rooms, which are flexible in function. There also will be a teen center, computer lab and weight room. 

“The opening of the new Houghton Park Community Center is a testament to years of community planning and advocacy here in Uptown,” said Councilmember Rex Richardson. “Our community is now home to the city’s newest and largest community center at the site of an important historic landmark. I look forward to celebrating with our neighbors once we can fully open it for public use.”

The Community Center design was built with sustainability and energy efficiency in mind, earning a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver rating. Drought-tolerant landscaping around the building and courtyard cuts down on water usage, and polycarbonate panels bring natural daylight into multipurpose rooms and reduces energy costs.

Parking lot accessibility has been improved with the addition of Electric Vehicle (EV) parking, reconfigured school bus loading and unloading zones and additional bicycle parking to accommodate various transportation methods.

The Public Works Department started construction on the new 6,450-square-foot building in March 2018. The project is made possible by a $5,741,896 fund from Measure A and $4,482,612 from other funding sources, including FY14 one-time funds.
