Long Beach, CA – The Long Beach Development Services Department is inviting residents and local stakeholders to get involved and provide input on a planning effort to update land use plans for the Downtown and adjacent waterfront areas. The initiative will update regulations for development in Downtown and establish a common vision for the future of the Downtown Shoreline area.
The City’s Downtown Plan Planned Development District (PD-30), which encompasses the Downtown area north of Ocean Boulevard, will be updated and renewed with a focus on preventing tenant displacement and building new housing for all income levels, including affordable housing.
The planning regulations for the area south of Ocean Boulevard, under the plan currently known as the Downtown Shoreline Planned Development District (PD-6), have not been systematically updated since the 1970s. The first phase of the project will include a visioning process to gauge stakeholder expectations and aspirations for the area and establish a contemporary community vision for a world-class waterfront.
The Department will host an in-person open house event to solicit public input on the plans, on Saturday, Sept. 9, 2023, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Billie Jean King Main Library (200 W. Broadway). Those interested in attending are requested to RSVP online. Live interpretation services will be available in Spanish, Khmer and Tagalog. Event materials will be offered in Spanish and may be provided in other languages upon request. Refreshments will be provided. Attendees are encouraged to visit anytime during the event to learn more about the planning efforts and provide feedback through the open house activities.
The open house is part of a series of community meetings, workshops and events to solicit ideas and feedback from residents, businesses and stakeholders in and for the Downtown and Shoreline communities.
The updated plans are expected to go before the Long Beach City Council for consideration in 2025.
