The City of Long Beach has received six awards by the Los Angeles Chapter of the American Planning Association (APA). The annual awards, which will be presented June 16, recognize exceptional planning achievements by individuals, cities, agencies, non-profits, and businesses in the Los Angeles region.
“It is an honor to be recognized by the American Planning Association among the many contending cities in Los Angeles County,” said Mayor Robert Garcia. “This achievement reflects our commitment to innovative, safe, and attractive development that supports sustainability in Long Beach.”
“These prestigious awards are a testament to the City’s growing leadership role in sustainable planning to implement neighborhood-focused programs and initiatives,” said Amy Bodek, Director of Long Beach Development Services. “These projects represent the right balance of new development and essential services, protection of the environment, and innovative change which provides a real opportunity to enhance our urban fabric and people’s lives for the better.”
The following Long Beach initiatives and projects have been recognized for helping to shape the course of planning by providing safer and healthier communities and places of lasting value:
This is the third year that Long Beach Development Services has been recognized by the APA. The Downtown Plan received an award for the 2013 Comprehensive Plan, Large Jurisdiction; and an Award of Merit for the Comprehensive Planning Award, Large Jurisdiction, at the 2013 State APA Conference. In 2014, the City’s Mobility Element received the Transportation Award of Excellence at the 2014 State APA Conference. To win an award at the State level is a significant accomplishment for any plan; entries are submitted from all 14 chapters in California.
The APA is a professional organization representing the field of city and regional planning in the United States. The APA provides leadership in the development of vital communities by advocating excellence in planning, providing the tools and support necessary to meet the challenges of growth and change, and serving as a networking channel for planners nationwide. Each year the organization keeps track of planning projects around the country and recognizes outstanding efforts through local award ceremonies. The Los Angeles section of the APA is one of eight local sections of the APA’s California Chapter, with more than 1,300 members in the Los Angeles area.
