The City of Long Beach Fleet Services was named the number one fleet in the U.S. and Canada among leading fleets, according to a May 7, 2024, announcement at the Government Fleet Expo and Conference, hosted by Government Fleet magazine. Long Beach was chosen for its exemplary leadership among staff, customers and the community; its efficient and competitive operations; overcoming challenges; and for its vision and direction.
“Our Fleet Services team continues to demonstrate a strong vision and direction, setting the standard for excellence in the field,” said Mayor Rex Richardson. “We are honored to receive this recognition as we continue to advance our services and infrastructure into a greener, more sustainable future.”
The Leading Fleets award is designed to highlight the top-performing fleet operations and their achievements, regardless of their location or budget. The award ranks fleets by size categories, from small fleets with 499 or fewer assets, mid-size fleets with 500 to 99, and large fleets with over 1,000 assets. Along with being selected as the number one overall fleet across all categories, Long Beach Fleet Services was also named the number one large fleet with more than 2,300 total vehicles.
Notable achievements for which Long Beach's Fleet Services earned the top spot include enhanced efforts in employee retention and recognition, such as retention bonuses, advanced training courses for employees, a quarterly Fleet MVP peer recognition program, and employee recognition events, as well as community engagement opportunities like pathway internships for local college students and donation drives. Fleet Services was also recognized for its efficiency practices; for example, multi-year contracts with vendors to support the streamlined parts, service and vehicle acquisitions which decreases the amount of time a City fleet vehicle is out of service by not having to wait for parts to be received. It also utilizes rideshare services to minimize motor pool operations and more efficiently assist employees in bringing fleet vehicles in for service. Fleet Services was additionally recognized for its revamped preventive maintenance program and continued investments in the City’s electric vehicle infrastructure and new technology, among other achievements.
Fleet Services’ vision, supported by City policy and shaped by State regulation, is to achieve the cleanest fleet possible through aggressive implementation of zero-emission vehicles (ZEV). Plans include electrification of over 410 medium and heavy-duty vehicles, with 100% electric purchases by 2027, contingent upon technology availability within the fleet of vehicles. Details about the City’s ZEV Blueprint is available here.
The Fleet Services Bureau is located within the Financial Management Department and provides vehicle and equipment acquisitions, preventive maintenance, unscheduled repair and fueling services to City departments so they can have safe, reliable and cost-effective equipment and vehicles to accomplish their operational goals and purposes. Additional core functions include Green Fleet sustainability strategy and policy coordination, electric vehicle and charging infrastructure, and fleet performance and efficiency analysis.
