Long Beach, CA - In addition to the closure of City of Long Beach facilities and services in observance of Memorial Day on Monday, May 31, 2021, the City is also reminding Long Beach residents and visitors to practice all health and safety protocols over the holiday weekend to keep our community safe and free from upward trends in cases of COVID-19.

“While a lot has reopened and we’re getting back to a new normal, it’s so important that folks continue to practice proper safety measures while enjoying the holiday weekend,” said Mayor Robert Garcia. “We encourage people to enjoy activities outdoors, physically-distanced from other groups and with proper face coverings.”

COVID-19 Health & Safety
The City reminds everyone to remain vigilant in practicing all health and safety protocols outlined in the Safer at Home Health Order. Pursuant to State guidance, people are encouraged to participate in outdoor social gatherings as opposed to indoor, maintain appropriate physical distancing from others, and should continue to wear a well-fitted face mask when in public places and while indoors, even if fully vaccinated. 

Fireworks Safety
Not only are all personal fireworks, including those labeled “Safe and Sane,” prohibited in the City of Long Beach, but they’re also a hazard for people and nearby structures, causing tens of millions of dollars in property damage annually and resulting in many injuries, the majority of which suffered by children. The loud, unexpected noise of fireworks also pose a serious health risk for veterans and other people experiencing post-traumatic stress, and cause panic for many pets.

To report illegal firework activity occurring in Long Beach, people can follow one of the below methods. For emergencies, always dial 9-1-1.

• Submit a complaint, or upload photos and video of illegal fireworks activity to the City Prosecutor’s office.
• Call the non-emergency number at the Communications Center at 562.435.6711 to report fireworks usage and/or sales.
• Email the patrol division where the activity is occurring and provide addresses, videos, license plates, photos and any other information that can be investigated. Please include your name, address and phone number so that you can be contacted if necessary:

In observance of the Memorial Day holiday, the City facilities and services listed below will adhere to the following schedules.

• El Dorado Regional Park (El Dorado Nature Center is closed)
• Marina offices (Alamitos Bay Marina, Shoreline Marina)*
• Main Police Station Front Desk
• Refuse and Recycling Collection
• Gas Services Dispatch (562.570.2140) open 24/7 for emergency calls
• Water/Sewer Dispatch (562.570.2390) open 24/7 for emergency calls 

Closed on Monday, May 31:

• Joint Information Center (562.570.NEWS), Community Hotline (562.570.INFO), Resource Hotline (562.570.INFO, option 5), Business Hotline (562.570.4BIZ)
• All City-run COVID-19 testing and vaccination sites
• Animal Care Services and spcaLA*
• Billie Jean King Main Library, all branch libraries, including LBPL To-Go pickup services and Library offices (digital resources available 24/7)
• WorkPlace, Youth Opportunity Center and Pacific Gateway Administrative offices*

City Hall
City Hall remains closed to the public until further notice, except for scheduled appointments for the Permit Center. Residents are encouraged to utilize online services during this time.

Street Sweeping
There will be no scheduled street sweeping or enforcement of street sweeping violations on Monday, May 31. Street sweeping will resume its regular schedule on Tuesday, June 1.

Parking Enforcement
Read your parking meter: Parking meters will be enforced on Monday, May 31, unless the meter states "Exempt on Holidays." The days and hours of enforcement are displayed inside the meters.

Refuse/Recycling
Trash and Recycling will be collected as scheduled on Monday, May 31.

Towing and Lien Sales
The Towing Operations & Vehicle Storage Facility, located at 3111 E. Willow St. between Temple Avenue and Redondo Avenue, will be closed on Monday, May 31. Normal business hours are:

• Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
• Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
• Closed Sunday and Holidays.

Vehicles and property are available for release outside of the hours listed above for an additional fee. More information can be found online.

Libraries
On May 18, 2021, BJK Main Library, Bay Shore, Mark Twain and Michelle Obama Neighborhood Libraries reopened to the public with limited capacity and select services. LBPL To-Go services remain available at the above reopened LBPL locations as well as at Bret Harte, El Dorado and Los Altos Neighborhood Libraries. Five LBPL locations, Alamitos, Bach, Brewitt, Burnett and Dana Neighborhood Libraries, remain closed to the public with no offered services at this time.

In observance of the Memorial Day holiday, all Library locations and services, including the Library main phone line, will be closed on Saturday, May 29. Library patrons are encouraged to utilize LBPL’s vast collection of digital resources, including the Library catalog, downloads, and databases, available 24/7.
