Long Beach, CA – The City of Long Beach is holding a hiring event to immediately fill current openings for Refuse Operator positions with the Public Works Department. The event will take place on Saturday, July 22, 2023, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the City’s Department of Health and Human Services (Health Department) Main Facilities Center, located at 2525 Grand Ave.

The Refuse Operator Hiring Event is part of a citywide effort to address the current Refuse Operator staffing shortage offering job seekers an expedited opportunity to apply, interview, and potentially be offered a position right on the spot. Candidates can expect to participate in an initial work history screening, interview(s), and onboarding activities, if offered a position, such as a background check and the completion of an on-site employment physical examination and drug screen at the event.

The Public Works Department has up to 30 full-time and part-time open Refuse Operator positions. All new refuse operators, including non-career employees, will be eligible for a recruitment incentive of up to $6,000.

Candidates may complete their applications online ahead of the event or in-person on the day of the event. All candidates are asked to bring the following items with them to the hiring event to help expedite the process:

  • Copy of DMV K4 driving record
  • Driver’s license or permit with Class A or B endorsement
  • Copy of resume and work history

In effort to address local and national staffing shortages in the solid waste industry, the City is actively working on implementing creative strategies to attract and retain commercial drivers. In addition to this hiring event, the City is implementing a robust training program by hiring non-career, part-time Refuse Operators and training them in preparation for the commercial driving test. This training program will serve as a pipeline for employment with the City.

Job seekers interested in attending the job fair are encouraged to RSVP ahead of time. More information, including online applications for the Refuse Operator I-III Position and Refuse Operator I Non-Career Position, is available on the Refuse Operator Hiring Event webpage.
