For the second year in a row, the City of Long Beach Fleet Services Bureau was named one of Heavy Duty Trucking Magazine’s Top Green Fleets in recognition of outstanding sustainability efforts. Long Beach was the only recipient in California and one of only two city governments nationwide to be recognized.
“Fleet Services has made sustainability a priority without sacrificing efficiency or economy. Fleet showcases the City’s commitment to civic innovation,” said Mayor Robert Garcia.
Heavy Duty Trucking’s Top 25 Green Fleets in 2017 include private, for-hire, government, utility, vocational and refuse fleets. The City’s Fleet was included in the Top 50 Green Fleets in 2016. For 2017, the magazine narrowed the field and made it more competitive, honoring only 25 of the most fuel-efficient, environmentally conscientious, alternative-fuel-forward fleets in the U.S.
“We are excited to be recognized as a Green Fleet leader,” said Dan Berlenbach, Fleet Services Bureau Manager. “Fleet Services has received numerous accolades and recognition in 2017, which reflects our commitment to efficiency and sustainability.”
Long Beach Fleet Services was ranked the tenth best government fleet in the nation by Government Fleet Magazine’s Leading Fleets competition and achieved a top-tier ranking in the National Association of Fleet Administrators (NAFA) Sustainable Fleet Accreditation program. Fleet Services was also a recent recipient of the City Manager’s Civic Innovation Award for sustainability and alternative fuel efforts.
This year, the City of Long Beach opened a station capable of refueling 100 heavy duty vehicles using a highly effective slow-release Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) filling technology. Fleet Services also transitioned to 100 percent renewable CNG, and the City unveiled the first municipal refuse truck with the Cummins ISL G Near Zero engine, which is as clean as a fully electric truck. Twenty-three of these trucks will use the new CNG station. Heavy Duty Trucking also highlighted the City’s Battery Electric Vehicle Task Force and expanding telematics program.
