Long Beach, CA – The City of Long Beach is celebrating Earth Month by hosting a series of fun, free, and family-friendly events, workshops, and volunteer opportunities for residents throughout April. Festivities will highlight a range of sustainable topics such as supporting local wildlife, reducing waste, and stewarding community spaces.

“Earth Month provides opportunities for our community to come together to both celebrate and protect our environment,” said Mayor Rex Richardson. “I encourage residents to join us in these fun-filled and educational festivities and learn about our many City programs, policies and dedicated staff working to create a more sustainable Long Beach.”

The Earth Month event series kicked off on Saturday, March 29 with Save the Planet, Be the Hero, a family-friendly Neighbor-to-Neighbor Program event that offered attendees a chance to become an environmental superhero by taking action to protect the planet. With fun games, hands-on activities and educational experiences, participants learned how small, everyday efforts can lead to big, positive changes for the environment.

To commemorate Earth Month 2025, the City also published an Earth Month Calendar that promotes a series of community activities and events throughout the month of April, including:

• McKinley Neighborhood Tree Planting, Saturday, April 5, 9 to 11:30 a.m. – Celebrate Earth Month by helping plant 20 trees in the McKinley neighborhood of Long Beach. Registration is required for this event as capacity is limited. To learn more and register, visit the event webpage.
• Earth Month Cigarette Butt and Beach Clean-up, Saturday, April 5, 10 a.m. to noon – Join the cigarette butt beach clean-up at Junipero Beach (2100 E. Ocean Blvd.), an event organized by the City’s Department of Health and Human Services Tobacco Education and Prevention Program, Long Beach Recycles, and Algalita Marine Research and Education. • Earth Day Celebration at City Hall, Thursday, April 24, 3 to 4 p.m. – Join the City of Long Beach for an Earth Day celebration at City Hall (411 W. Ocean Blvd.). The event will center this year’s international Earth Day theme—Our Power, Our Planet—by providing tips and resources for residents to support renewable energy programs. • Earth Day Coastal Clean-up, Saturday, April 19, 10 a.m. to noon – Join the City’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine for a clean-up event to help keep our local marine environment clean and healthy and protect our coastline. Community members are encouraged to reduce their footprint by bringing their own bucket or bag. Meet on the sand east of the Belmont Pier. Please note that rain will cancel the event. • Annual City Nature Challenge, Saturday, April 26, 9 a.m. to noon – Participate in this internationally celebrated event by identifying local flora and fauna and sharing those observations with other cities across the world via the iNaturalist app. Join at Willow Springs Park (2745 Orange Ave.) to explore trails, help identify wildlife and take part in fun activities that celebrate Long Beach’s native habitat. • Long Beach Fixit Clinic, Sunday, April 27, noon to 3 p.m. – The Department of Public Works Environmental Services Bureau, in partnership with Algalita Marine Research and Education, Pedal Movement, the LB Reuses coalition, and Long Beach Time Exchange, is hosting Long Beach Fixit Clinics at no cost to Long Beach residents. These events offer community members a chance to repair their broken household items with help from skilled volunteer Fixit coaches. In addition to these events, various City departments are debuting eco-conscious educational campaigns to encourage residents to make sustainable choices. The Office of Climate Action & Sustainability launched a Climate Action Toolkit for residents at the March 29 Earth Month Kickoff event. The Toolkit was created in collaboration with City Fabrick through the support of the Neighbor-to-Neighbor grant and includes guidance for taking sustainable actions, ranging from starting a home garden to planning a community clean-up event. In honor of Food Waste Prevention Week, recognized by communities across the nation April 7-13, the Environmental Services Bureau will provide tips for storing and extending the life of produce. Tips will be shared on the Bureau’s social accounts at @lbrecycles. The Tobacco Education and Prevention Program will celebrate its Month of Action 30 by sharing free toolkits with residents, complete with the resources necessary to host their own community clean-up events.
