Long Beach, CA – The City of Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services (Health Department) Tobacco Education and Prevention Program, in collaboration with the City’s Office of Climate Action and Sustainability Neighbor-to-Neighbor Program, invites community members of all ages to attend its Save the Planet, Be the Hero: Earth Month Kickoff Event. This fun, family-friendly and educational environmental event will be held on Saturday, March 29, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Admiral Kidd Park (2125 Santa Fe Ave.) and will offer attendees a chance to become an environmental superhero and take action to protect the planet.

“Through this Neighbor-to-Neighbor Program event, we are providing an opportunity for our community to not only learn about environmental stewardship and the dangers of tobacco, but to do so while building strong connections with their neighbors,” said Mayor Rex Richardson. “We are committed to bringing people together to inspire action and create a healthier, more sustainable Long Beach.”

The event will feature interactive games, educational booths and exciting giveaways designed to inspire meaningful action for a healthier and greener community. Attendees will also enjoy hands-on activities that will focus on building a more sustainable future through climate action, environmental education and community connection. Participants will learn how small, everyday efforts, such as composting and cleaning up cigarette butts, can lead to big, positive changes for the environment and the community’s overall health. The Tobacco Education and Prevention Program is dedicated to educating the community about the dangers of tobacco use and promoting healthy, tobacco-free lifestyles. The program also addresses the impact of tobacco on the environment, particularly through cigarette litter, as cigarette butts are the most littered item in the world.

The event will also celebrate the launch of the Long Beach Climate Action Toolkit, a resource full of helpful tips for residents interested in taking their climate hero training to the next level. The toolkit, which will be available on the Neighbor-to-Neighbor Program webpage beginning Monday, March 31, will be distributed to participants at the event. People interested in attending may use the event’s registration page to sign up ahead of the event. Registration is not required to attend.

The Office of Climate Action and Sustainability’s mission is to provide policies and programs that advance environmental stewardship, support local sustainability practices, and create a more livable and resilient Long Beach. The Neighbor-to-Neighbor Program works to strengthen communities by bringing residents together through educational activities and local action. The program fosters connections to help address local needs and promote environmental stewardship.
