City Clerk Monique De La Garza is working with Long Beach Unified School District (LBUSD) high schools and Long Beach City College (LBCC) to register and pre-register as many students as possible on National Voter Registration Day (NVRD), September 24, 2019. Students and faculty across Long Beach will be hosting events for eligible students who are at least 16 years old. Concurrently, the office of Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk is coordinating NVRD events at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB).
“Voting is a tool that allows every citizen to make their voices heard,” said Mayor Garcia. “I’m proud to work alongside our City Clerk to encourage every eligible voter to register or preregister to vote.”
NVRD kits are scheduled to be distributed by the City Clerk’s Office the week of September 16 to participating LBUSD high schools, LBCC and CSULB. They include posters, voter registration forms, giveaway items and information about voting rights. The Water Replenishment District, which is co-sponsoring this year’s NVRD event, will include items for the kits. This year, the campaign also will include social media tools to encourage the larger Long Beach community to partake in these efforts; those will be distributed by the City Clerk’s office via LinkLB.
“Last year, we registered and pre-registered more than 600 students,” said Long Beach City Clerk Monique De La Garza. “This year, our goal is to surpass 750 students! To ensure that all sectors of our community are represented, all citizens are encouraged to exercise their right to vote this March 2020. Our office is here to facilitate this process for our educational institutions. We are training students and faculty to plan and execute successful drives.”
