Long Beach, CA – The City of Long Beach today helped commemorate the start of construction for 1400 Long Beach, a 163-unit affordable housing project in the Midtown area for low-income individuals and families. The six-story development by Meta Housing will be comprised of one-, two- and three-bedroom units and feature numerous amenities including a community room, an outdoor courtyard and children’s play area.
“We are thrilled to begin construction for this exciting project in Midtown,” said Mayor Rex Richardson. “It carries on our commitment to prioritizing affordable housing options for our community, as we continue to produce affordable housing at record levels. And because of this great project, 163 Central Long Beach families will have stability and better opportunities to thrive.”
At a morning groundbreaking event that featured the ceremonial shovel-turning of dirt, Mayor Richardson and other City officials were joined by executives from Meta Housing and Bank of America.
The project, located on a formerly vacant commercial lot at its namesake address of 1400 Long Beach Blvd., will provide rental units for low and extremely low-income households earning between 30 to 70 percent of the area median income (AMI). The 1400 Long Beach development represents an $87.6 million investment into the Midtown community, with construction scheduled for completion mid-2026.
“This development activates a vacant site with much needed quality, affordable housing and enhance the livability of the community,” said Sixth District Councilwoman Dr. Suely Saro. “I am proud that Council District 6 continues to contribute to increasing housing availability, meanwhile revitalizing neighborhoods.”
With the opening earlier this year of two other projects — 26 Point 2 near the Traffic Circle and the Wellspring project in Cambodia Town — the City this year is continuing its fast-track efforts to support the building of safe, quality housing for residents across all income levels while increasing the feasibility of development of underused sites across the city. More information about those projects and other affordable housing developments around the city can be found in the Department’s 2023 Annual Report.
“We are deeply grateful to the City of Long Beach and our partners, including the Foundation for Affordable Housing, Bank of America, and the California Housing Finance Agency whose support has been instrumental in making this vision a reality,” said Taylor Rasmussen, Meta’s Vice President of Development.
With more than 30 years of experience in the industry, Meta Housing, based in Los Angeles, is a recognized developer of high-quality affordable housing in Southern California and around the state.
