Update 12/4/2023:

On December 2, 2023, the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner ruled the official manner of death to be homicide. Based on this determination, this case is being investigated as a homicide.

Detectives are asking for the community’s help in gathering additional information. If anyone observed any altercations in the area of 14th Street Park and Seaside Park on Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2023, or were involved in any altercations with Anthony Mercy, please contact Homicide Detectives.

Originally Published 11/30/2023:

Homicide detectives are investigating the death of a male adult, which occurred on Nov. 29, 2023, in the 1900 block of Long Beach Boulevard.

On Nov. 29, 2023, at approximately 3:18 p.m., officers responded to the 1900 block of Long Beach Boulevard to assist the Long Beach Fire Department with a male adult in need of medical attention. Upon arrival, the male adult was determined deceased and later identified as Anthony Mercy, a 59-year-old resident of Long Beach.

While on scene, officers observed Mercy having injuries, which were possibly related to his death. Homicide detectives responded to the scene to further the investigation. At this time, the cause of death is being classified as undetermined.

The official cause of death will be determined by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner.

The preliminary investigation indicates that Mercy was possibly involved in a dispute or altercation on November 28, in the area of 14th Street Park and Seaside Park.
