On April 11th, 2020, at approximately 4:40 p.m., officers responded to an injury traffic collision on Canal Avenue south of Ester Street involving one vehicle that collided into two parked vehicles.
Upon arrival, officers discovered one of the parked vehicles had an occupant inside at the time of the collision. Long Beach Fire Department personnel arrived on scene, began life saving measures on the passenger of the parked vehicle, but she succumbed to her injuries at the scene.
The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2003 Nissan Altima was traveling northbound Canal Avenue when it struck a parked 1995 Toyota Tercel. This impact caused the Tercel to collide with the trailer of a parked semi-truck.
The Tercel was occupied by a 56-year-old female resident of Rancho Dominguez at the time of the accident and she succumbed to her injuries at the scene. Her identity is being withheld until the next of kin has been notified.
The driver of the Nissan Altima stepped out of the vehicle and fled the scene on foot after the collision. He was taken into custody shortly after the collision.
The driver of the Altima has been identified as 23-year-old Eric Munson from Long Beach. Munson was found to be under the influence at the time of the collision and was booked at the Long Beach City Jail for felony driving under the influence and felony hit-and-run. Munson is being held on $100,000 bail.
The passenger in the Munson's vehicle remained on scene, cooperated with the investigation and was released.
