On Sunday, April 29, 2018, at approx. 8:10 a.m., officers were dispatched to the intersection of Bellflower Boulevard and Atherton Street regarding an injury traffic collision, which resulted in the death of a male adult.

Upon arrival, officers located a 2018 Ford Fusion that was being driven by a male adult that had struck a light pole. The driver was transported to a local hospital in serious condition by Long Beach Fire Department paramedics, and pronounced deceased. It was also discovered that the driver had struck a bicyclist prior to striking the light pole. The bicyclist was also transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The preliminary investigation revealed that the driver was traveling in the #3 southbound lane of Bellflower Blvd., approaching Atherton St., when his vehicle began to repeatedly strike the curb of the west service road raised median. The bicyclist, a 64-year-old resident of Long Beach, was riding in the #3 southbound lane of Bellflower Blvd. approaching Atherton St. and preparing to stop for the red light when the Fusion struck him from behind. The vehicle then continued through the intersection and collided with a light pole on the southwest corner of Bellflower Blvd and Atherton St.

Anyone who may have witnessed this collision is asked to contact L.B.P.D Collision Investigation Detective Garcia at (562) 570-7355. Anonymous tips may be submitted through “LA Crime Stoppers” by calling 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), downloading the “P3 TIPS” app to your smart phone (available at the Apple App store and Google Play), or visiting www.LACrimeStoppers.org.
