On Sunday, March 3, 2019, at approximately 1:20 a.m., officers responded to the intersection of 2nd Street and Marina Drive regarding an injury traffic collision which resulted in the death of a male adult.

Upon arrival, officers found that a red 2004 Toyota Camry had collided with the traffic control pole on the southeast corner of 2nd Street and Marina Drive and the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames. The driver had been pulled from the vehicle by witnesses and was lying near the center median of Marina Drive.

Officers found that the male adult driver was unconscious and began CPR. Long Beach Fire Department Personnel arrived and continued life-saving measures on the driver. Long Beach Fire transported the critically injured driver to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries a short time later.

Preliminary investigation revealed that leading up the 2004 Toyota had just been involved in a non-injury hit and run collision near 2nd Street and Granada Avenue. The driver was fleeing the scene of that collision at a high rate of speed when he lost control of his vehicle and collided with the traffic control pole

No identification was found on the driver at the time of the collision.

Anyone who may have information regarding this incident is asked to call Long Beach Police Department, Collision Investigation Detective David Lauro at (562) 570-7355.
