CORRECTION 10/29/23: The second reference of the BLS Unit now indicates it is a LBFD vehicle, not LBPD as originally published.
Collision Investigation detectives are investigating a traffic collision that occurred on Oct. 29, 2023, which resulted in the death of a female adult.
On Sunday, Oct. 29, 2023, at approximately 2:07 a.m. officers were dispatched to the area of the Shoreline Drive and the 710 Freeway near the 7th Street exit, regarding an injury traffic collision between a vehicle and a Long Beach Fire Department Basic Life Support (BLS) Unit, which resulted in the death of a female adult.
When officers arrived on scene, they found a collision occurred between a 2018 Honda Civic and LBFD vehicle, a BLS Unit. Long Beach Fire Department personnel was already on scene treating the male adult driver of the 2018 Honda Civic, and later transported him to a local hospital for their non-life-threatening injuries. The preliminary investigation revealed the 2018 Honda was driven by a 27-year-old resident of Long Beach, Christian Castillas, who was traveling northbound on shoreline Drive when he collided with a parked Long Beach Fire BLS Unit on the shoulder.
Impaired driving and speed were believed to be a factor at the time of the collision.
Following medical clearance, Castillas was taken into custody and booked for felony vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and felony driving under the influence causing bodily injury. Bail was set at $100,000.
The identification of the passenger is being withheld pending notification to the next of kin.
