Collision Investigation detectives are investigating a traffic collision that occurred on Nov. 13, 2023, which resulted in the death of a male adult pedestrian.

At 5:50 p.m., officers from the Long Beach Police Department responded to an injury traffic collision in the area of Pacific Coast Highway and Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue.

Upon arrival, officers discovered two vehicles were invovled in a collision. The force of the collision caused one of the vehicles to strike a pedestrian on the sidewalk. Long Beach Fire Department personnel responded and determined the pedestrian had succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The preliminary investigation revealed a 2010 Nissan 350z driven by a 20-year-old male resident of Long Beach, was traveling eastbound Pacific Coast Highway at a high rate of a speed. A 2017 Jeep Cherokee driven by a 50-year-old female resident of Long Beach, made a left turn from westbound Pacific Coast Highway to southbound Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue in front of the Nissan. The Nissan collided with the Jeep and then struck a traffic signal pole. The force of the collision caused the Nissan to strike a pedestrian who was on the south sidewalk of Pacific Coast Highway, east of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue.

The driver of the Nissan was transported to a local hospital and was treated for his minor injuries. The driver of the Jeep complained of pain but refused medical treatment at the scene.

Impaired and distracted driving do not appear to be a factor in this collision, however speed is being investigated as a factor in this collision.

The Los Angeles County Department of the Medical Examiner will identify the pedestrian and notify next of kin.
