On Oct. 27, 2022 at approximately 6:22 p.m., officers were dispatched to the area of Pacific Coast Highway and Channel Drive regarding an injury traffic accident, which resulted in the death of a male adult pedestrian.

When officers arrived on scene, they discovered an injured pedestrian in southbound lanes of Pacific Coast Highway. The pedestrian was conscious and alert and was speaking to Good Samaritans who were providing him aid. Personnel from the Long Beach Fire Department arrived on scene and transported the pedestrian to a local hospital where he was listed in critical condition. Several hours later, the pedestrian died from his injuries.

The preliminary investigation revealed the pedestrian was running across Pacific Coast Highway, outside of a crosswalk, when he was struck by a 2021 Toyota Corolla that was being driven by a 20-year-old resident of Wilmington. The driver and several witnesses remained at the scene and were cooperating with the investigation.

The identity of the pedestrian is being withheld, pending notification of the next of kin.

At this time, speed, distracted driving, and impaired driving are not believed to be contributing factors in the collision.

Anyone who may have witnessed this collision is asked to contact LBPD Collision Investigation Detail Detective Joseph Johnson at (562) 570-7355.
