On Feb. 2, 2022 at approximately 9:02 p.m., officers responded to a hit-and-run injury traffic collision in the area of Anaheim Street and the Los Angeles River, which resulted in the death of a male adult.

Upon arrival, officers located a male pedestrian unconscious in the roadway who sustained
multiple severe injuries.

The preliminary investigation revealed an unknown vehicle was traveling eastbound on Anaheim
Street, and struck a male pedestrian in the eastbound lanes of Anaheim Street at an unknown rate of
speed.The driver immediately fled the scene of the incident. Long Beach Fire Department personnel responded to the scene and transported the pedestrian to a local hospital for his injuries.

On Feb. 22, 2022, detectives from the Collision Investigation Detail were notified that the pedestrian in the incident succumbed to their injuries on Feb. 19, 2022. The pedestrian was identified as James Simmons, a 35-year-old resident of Long Beach.

The investigation is ongoing.
