On Dec. 31, 2023, at approximately 04:25 a.m., officers were dispatched to the 700 block of W. Pacific Coast Highway regarding a person down in the roadway.
Officers and Long Beach Fire Department personnel responded to the scene and located an adult male pedestrian in the eastbound lanes of traffic of Pacific Coast Highway between Daisy Avenue and Maine Avenue. The pedestrian suffered life-threatening injuries to his upper body and was determined to be deceased at the scene.
The preliminary investigation revealed a vehicle had struck the pedestrian who was in the roadway, and not in a marked or unmarked crosswalk. The vehicle fled the scene prior to officers’ arrival. A second vehicle, driven by a 49-year-old resident of Long Beach, struck the pedestrian after the initial collision. That driver remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation.
At this time, it is unknown if speed, distracted driving, or impaired driving were contributing factors in the collision.
