On April 7, 2023, at approximately 3:13 p.m., patrol officers were flagged down near the area of 45th Street and Atlantic Avenue regarding a hit-and-run traffic collision, which resulted in the death of a male adult.

Upon arrival, officers discovered a vehicle had struck a male pedestrian and two parked cars before fleeing the scene. Officers rendered aid to the victim until the Long Beach Fire Department arrived and transported him to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2011 Ford F-150 was traveling eastbound on 45th Street, east of Atlantic Avenue, at a high rate of speed when the driver stuck the victim who was standing next to his parked vehicle. The Ford pinned the pedestrian between the two vehicles before continuing eastbound and striking another parked vehicle. The driver subsequently fled the scene and made no attempt to check the victim's well-being.

A short time later, officers located the suspect and his vehicle near the area of 56th Street and Rose Avenue and took him into custody. At this time, the suspect was believed to be under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision, and speed is also believed to be a factor in the collision.

The suspect was identified as 42-year-old Jose Trujillo of Long Beach who was arrested for one count of murder, one count of driving under the influence of alcohol causing bodily injury, and one count of hit and run resulting in death or injury. Bail was set at $2,000,000.

The pedestrian’s identification is being withheld pending notification to next of kin which will be conducted by the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office.
