On May 13, 2023, at approximately 02:23 a.m., officers were dispatched to Pacific Coast Highway and the 103 Freeway regarding an injury traffic collision involving an overturned vehicle, which resulted in the death of a male adult.

Upon arrival, officers located a 2021 BMW that left the roadway. The driver and front passenger were located, and subsequently provided medical aid and transported to local hospitals by Long Beach Fire Department personnel. A male adult rear passenger that had been ejected was also located, and Fire Department personnel performed life-saving medical aid, however he was declared deceased at the scene.

The preliminary investigation revealed the BMW was traveling westbound on Pacific Coast Highway in the eastbound lanes of travel. The vehicle collided with the south curb of the roadway where it began to lose control. The vehicle continued westbound striking a raised median and another curb before leaving the roadway. When the vehicle left the roadway, it became airborne and overturned. The force of the collision ejected the rear passenger of the vehicle, who is only being identified as an 18-year-old male resident of Wilmington, pending notification of next of kin by the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office.

The BMW was being driven by an 18-year-old male resident of Wilmington, who remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation.

Impaired driving and speed are being investigated as possible factors in this collision.
