On April 10, 2021, at approximately 1:20 a.m., officers were dispatched to the intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and Cherry Avenue regarding an injury traffic collision, which resulted in the death of a male adult.

Upon arrival, officers contacted a Signal Hill Police Department officer who was already on scene performing life-saving measures to a male pedestrian who was lying in the roadway west of the intersection. The Long Beach Fire Department responded and transported the pedestrian to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased due to his injuries.

The preliminary investigation revealed the pedestrian, a male adult, was crossing Pacific Coast Highway northbound in the crosswalk on the east side of the intersection against a red crossing signal.

The pedestrian was struck by a 2009 Honda Civic, driven by a 20-year-old male resident of the City of Anaheim, who was traveling west on Pacific Coast Highway. The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. Alcohol, drugs, and distracted driving are not believed to be factors in the collision. The driver had a valid license and proof of insurance.

The pedestrian will be identified by the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office who will assist in notifying the next-of-kin.

Anyone who may have information regarding this incident or can help identify the pedestrian is asked to call Long Beach Police Department Collision Investigation Detail Detective Shawn Loughlin at (562) 570-7355.
