On Monday, September 10, 2018 at approximately 1:30 p.m., officers were dispatched to the intersection of Orange Avenue and 52nd Street regarding a vehicle versus bicyclist injury traffic collision.
Upon arrival, officers located the injured bicyclist. Long Beach Fire Department responded and transported the bicyclist to a local hospital in critical condition with major head and body trauma.
The preliminary investigation revealed a 21-year-old female resident of Long Beach, driving a 2018 Chevrolet Cruze, was traveling southbound on Orange Avenue approaching 52nd Street on a green light. The bicyclist, a 38-year-old male resident of Long Beach, was traveling southbound on Orange Avenue in the northbound lanes against traffic, approaching 52nd Street.
Upon entering the intersection, the bicyclist made a westbound right turn on 52nd Street, against a red light. The bicyclist was struck by the Chevrolet Cruze entering the intersection on a green light. The driver of the Chevrolet Cruze remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. The driver was later released, pending further investigation.
On Thursday, September 13, 2018, the bicyclist succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at a local hospital.
On Tuesday, September 18, 2018, the Long Beach Police Department's Collision Investigation Detail was notified by the Los Angeles County Coroner's Office of the bicyclist's death.
