On October 17, 2019, at approximately 8:40 p.m., officers responded to a report of a hit and run injury traffic collision near the intersection of Magnolia Avenue and Cowles Street between a vehicle and pedestrian, that resulted in the death of a male adult.

When officers arrived, they observed Long Beach Fire Department Paramedics rendering aid to a male adult pedestrian in the roadway. The victim was transported to a local hospital by the Long Beach Fire Department, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The victim is only being identified as a 59-year-old male resident of Long Beach, pending notification of next of kin by the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office.

The preliminary investigation revealed that the victim was walking westbound across Magnolia Avenue in an unmarked crosswalk when he was struck by a 1998 Honda Civic that was driving southbound on Magnolia Avenue. The vehicle fled the scene but was located a short time later in the 500 block of Magnolia Ave and the driver was taken into custody.

The driver, 23-year-old Ethen Hazelton of Long Beach, was booked for hit and run and is being held on $50,000 bail.
