On Jan. 18, 2022 at approximately 1:05 p.m., officers responded to an injury traffic collision in the area of Del Rey Court and Anaheim Street, which resulted in the death of a male adult.
Long Beach Fire Department personnel were already on scene when officers arrived. Fire Department personnel located a pedestrian that had been struck by a trash truck on Del Rey Court and Anaheim Street, and determined the pedestrian deceased at the scene.
The preliminary investigation revealed a privately owned garbage truck was backing up northbound on Del Rey Court, near Anaheim Street, when it struck a male adult pedestrian who was laying down in the alley.
The truck driver called 9-1-1, remained on scene and cooperated with the investigation. The truck driver was identified by his valid commercial license as a 62-year-old male resident of Norwalk and was later released from the scene.
The pedestrian was identified as a 57-year-old resident of Long Beach, who appeared to be experiencing homelessness. The identity of the pedestrian is being withheld pending next of kin notification.
Distracted driving, impairment and speed do not appear to be a factor in this collision.
