CORRECTION 12/29/21: The fatal collision occurred on Dec. 24, 2021, not Dec. 21, 2021 as originally reported, and has been corrected below.
On Dec. 24, 2021 at 10:17 p.m., officers responded to a collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian in the area of Atherton Street and Montair Avenue, which resulted in the death of an adult male.
When officers arrived, they located a male adult pedestrian in the roadway suffering from critical injuries. Long Beach Fire Department personnel arrived on scene and transported the pedestrian to a local hospital where he remained in critical condition.
The preliminary investigation revealed the pedestrian was crossing northbound on Atherton Street, outside of a crosswalk, when a silver sedan traveling westbound struck him. The sedan fled the scene before officers arrived.
On Dec. 28, 2021, detectives were notified that the pedestrian had succumbed to their injuries on Dec. 27, 2021. The Los Angeles County Coroner's Office is assisting in notifying next of kin.
