On Friday, September 25, 2020 at approximately 6:30 p.m. officers were dispatched to the area of Cherry Avenue and 45th Street regarding an injury traffic collision between a vehicle and a tree, which resulted in the death of a male adult.
Upon arrival officers located a 2002 Subaru WRX that had collided with a tree on the east side of Cherry Avenue, north of 45th Street.Long Beach Fire personnel arrived on scene and administered medical aid to the only occupant of the vehicle. The driver, an 18-year-old resident of the City of Paramount succumbed to his injuries at the scene and no other persons were involved in the collision. The Driver’s identity is being withheld pending notification of the next of kin.
The preliminary investigation revealed the 2002 Subaru WRX was traveling at a high rate of speed southbound Cherry Avenue in the southbound lanes when the driver lost control of the vehicle and struck the center divider. The vehicle crossed the center divider and continued southbound Cherry Avenue in the northbound lanes. The vehicle struck the east curb of Cherry Avenue and then struck a tree where the vehicle came to rest.
It is unknown if distracted or impaired driving were a factor in the collision at this time.
