On March 19, 2021, at approximately 3:16 p.m., officers from the Long Beach Police Department were dispatched to a business parking lot in the 1300 block of Atlantic Avenue regarding an injury traffic collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian, which resulted in the death of the pedestrian.
The Long Beach Fire Department responded and immediately transported the victim, an 80-year-old female, to a local hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries.
Preliminary investigation revealed a 2007 Dodge Nitro SUV, driven by a 45-year-old- resident of Long Beach, reversed out of a parking stall then drove forward to exit the parking lot. As the vehicle drove forward the pedestrian was struck in the parking stall directly next to the vehicle as she was squatting down. The driver then stopped and immediately requested a bystander to contact 9-1-1 to report the incident. The driver stayed with the victim until Long Beach Fire Department personnel arrived.
The driver of the Dodge remained on scene and cooperated with the investigation. Neither impaired or distracted driving were contributing factors of the collision.
The identity of the pedestrian is being withheld pending the notification of the next of kin.
